1997
The Spark

A team of engineers and our CEO, Byron Taylor, then property lawyer, founded Protea Metering with a unified vision: reshape South Africa’s utility landscape.

2001
Incorporated, Empowered

We convert from a Closed Corporation to a (Pty) Ltd, with our founding team still at the helm.

2007
Prepaid Growth

Our prepaid portfolio begins expanding across developments, marking the start of a new chapter in client-driven utility metering.

2008
STS-Certified & Go Digital

We secure our own secure STS certification and begin investing in proprietary systems and online billing tools which lay the groundwork for a hybrid metering platform.

2010
Founding Member ERASA

Protea Metering becomes a founding member of the Electricity Resellers Association of South Africa (ERASA), with our CEO appointed as Chairperson.

2012–2018
Expanding the Network

We expand into key metros and municipalities including Cape Town, KZN, Bloemfontein, and Potchefstroom. This cements our role as a trusted infrastructure partner.

2013
Smart Platform Launch

We launch our online prepaid and wallet system, integrating remote readings, compliance tools, and internal controls under one platform.

2015
Automated Water Leaks Alerts

We introduce automated water leak detection, enabling early alerts and rapid response. By identifying faults before they escalate, we help clients avoid costly damage.
